Gingivitis - Periodontitis

Gingivitis is the most common gum disease in children and the gums look swollen, red, and the patient reports bleeding while tooth brushing. The severity or frequency of gingivitis may increase during puberty due to the hormonal changes. The treatment for gingivitis includes a tooth cleaning as well as proper oral hygiene habits in order to successfully eliminate the inflammation.

However, if gingivitis is not addressed then it may progress into periodontitis during adulthood.

Periodontitis has all the characteristic of gingivitis but additionally there is gum recessions and bone loss around the teeth. If left untreated, periodontitis will lead to gradual loss of the teeth. Periodontitis should be treated by a specialized Periodontist. Treatment includes a deep cleaning as well as surgical procedures to eliminate the inflammation. Follow-up should occur at regular intervals in order to prevent relapse.
